Hunter’s First Elk – Best Day of Hunting I Have Ever Had

My son Hunter drew a limited-entry youth elk tag in Utah, and I had visions of days out scouting and hunting together before the season even opened. Then football happened. Practice, a Friday night game, Homecoming Saturday. The whole week was already spoken for before we ever got a chance to use the tag. One day. That’s what hunting looks like when your kid is dedicated to football, and honestly, I’ll take it.

So we made that one day count. Up early, in the dark, sitting in a meadow we’d scouted before the season. And then… nothing. Dead quiet all morning. Around 9 we started throwing out some simple cow calls. One call, then a long wait, then another. An hour of that. Nothing answering back. We were starting to talk ourselves into pulling out and trying somewhere else, second-guessing the whole plan, when the meadow just filled up. Not just a few elk. Thirty, maybe forty, all at once, like they’d been hiding under the mountain and someone let them out.

Hunter set his sights on a cow fast. They’d already caught our wind, so there wasn’t time to be picky or think it over. He had one shot before the whole herd blew out of there. Right as he squeezed the trigger, a bull bugled somewhere behind that herd. We never laid eyes on him. Never will know how big he was. I think about that bugle more than I probably should.

Hunter made a clean shot and dropped the cow right where he shot him. 10:30 in the morning, his first elk, done before some guys are even out of camp.

That’s the good part. Then the real work started.

When you’ve quartered an elk, you know there’s a real gap between “we got one” and “we’re done.” We broke it down, split the load, and started hauling. We quickly remembered we were three miles from the truck with an elk on the ground.

I’ve had a lot of good hunts. This is the one I’ll be telling Hunter’s kids about someday. Not because of the size of anything, but because of a bugle of a bull elk, a herd that materialized out of nowhere, and a whole week of football and Homecoming that somehow still left room for one perfect morning. I doubt a day of hunting will ever top the experience of seeing my son harvest his first elk.

If you’ve got a first-elk story of your own, or a hunt that’s stuck with you for reasons that have nothing to do with antler size, drop it below. I want to hear it.
