In my own back yard…

September 8, 2008 by Allen 8 Comments

This morning Jason and Fred got up early and headed for the mountains, they went out after mainly Elk but deer and elk overlap all season this year.  I had to get into work early so I was in the office when my wife called.  Now isn’t it ironic we can spend days in the mountains chasing deer and then… She was backing out of the driveway and saw two bucks on our side yard!

Now we live in the south west corner of the Salt Lake Valley.  I have backyard neighbors that have livestock, one house over there is a large field that they grow Alfalfa in.  So we are kinda in a rural area but the subdivision I am in is all new construction and not where you’d expect deer to hang out.  I’ve only lived there 7 months and have seen some track in my yard but never any deer.

Well this morning my two boys and wife had a few hours of entertainment watching them graze.  When my wife first saw them she was in our Expedition and rolled down the windows to take some pictures, my boy Brody was hanging out the window yelling “Hi Deer!!”.  They didn’t seem to mind the noise or attention.

Trav has a theory that he’s going to hunt in street clothes so the bucks don’t wonder what that moving tree is.  Well it seems like they were laughing at us today but I’m still glad my boys were able to see the bucks!  It get’s them excited and as Brody my two year old says, “that’s awesome!!”.  Well here’s the favorite photo, Brody got face to face with this buck.

How super cool! With how much Brody loves horses, I’m sure he fell in love with those bucks. I just wonder how you will explain to him that you were out trying to shoot them! You might fall out of favor with Brody! And with bucks come mountain lions so be careful! Such a cool picture though, you need to submit it in a photo contest.

Maybe you should keep them as pets instead of trying to shoot them.

That is interesting. I wonder why they were so close to the houses. Maybe because of the new construction. Maybe because someone in the neighborhood has been feeding them?

That’s very cool. I bet it was fun watching those deer. They seemed pretty comfortable too.

Looks like you need to be hunting a little closer to home. :)

The irony! Did Tim and Jason even see any deer?

Tim and Jason didn’t see any, they were mainly after elk and they saw plenty of sign the bulls just weren’t talking or coming in!! I do need to hunt closer to home, I’ve been asking around and there is a couple of canyons right by where I’m at that I can hunt the problem is there’s a lot of private property so I have to be careful. The deer were really calm as if they hang out by houses all the time, I’ve heard of an occasional deer in the area but not hanging out in the neighborhood like that. The field that grows alfalfa doesn’t have anything right now so I wonder if the habit of coming to the field stayed and they just moved into the yards looking for food. They haven’t been back since but hope to see them occasionally, maybe I’ll put a salt lick or something in my yard!! My wife isn’t too thrilled about them eating the rose bush but I think it’s worth it to have them around, maybe I’ll plant more food for them!!
Mary and Grandma Jo, both my boys like venison so they understand where dinner comes from!!
