Last weekend my brothers and I went camping with dad and we took our boys with us. It was a great guys night out. As we were sitting around the trailer we were drawn to stories about hunting. We stayed up late talking about some of the great experiences we have had in the woods together.
Here in Utah we have an extended Archery Hunt that allows us to hunt the Wasatch front through the month of November. This is a great benefit to Archery hunters as the Wasatch Front is highly ranked for large mule’s. A few years back a friend and I were up hunting this ridge snow had already taken over the ground. I set up on this ridge while my friend headed up the hill to set up a little higher. We hadn’t seen anything and it was starting to get cold and dark. He started to come down the hill and ended setting up behind this bush about 50 yards from me. Just before dark this large buck starts to come across the ridge line. As he starts to get closer I get ready to take the shot. Just before he comes into my clearing he starts to head up the hill straight at my friend. I decided to pass up on my less then ideal shot and let my friend take him. I had no idea that my friend didn’t see this buck coming. Meanwhile my friend has managed to get into snow up to his waist. As this nice buck heads up the hill my friend attempts to climb out of the snow and ends up spooking the deer and he takes off up the hill. As they say heinsite is 20/20 and I should have taken the shot when I had it but at least we have a story to tell.
Hunting stories are what makes hunting so great!
